New video, recorded at the Museo Fundación Juan March, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, 2016.

For this occasion we changed lots of things like the types of valves we use (the work works with compressed air), the software, the length of pipes and, being the most important change, the type of membrane that produces the sound.

Último Esfuerzo Industrial II (2014)

Último Esfuerzo Industrial II, Chelva, October 2014

Último Esfuerzo Industrial II, Chelva, October 2014

Último Esfuerzo Industrial II consists of four electric motors, four frequency controllers, four contact microphones and four bass guitar amps that amplify the signals captured by the mics. The motors are mounted on ancient moulds for the production of cast iron from Puerto de Sagunto, an industrial town north of Valencia, founded at the beginning of the 20th century. These wooden moulds are not just pedestals they also function as sound chamber for the microphones. Together with the old second-hand motors with reduction gear and cogwheels they evoke the aesthetics and dreams of the futurist movement of an age ago. At that time, sound design and control were very limited, but now contemporary laptop performers enjoy almost infinite sonic possibilities. Último Esfuerzo Industrial II builds a bridge between these two eras with simple and direct means. The contact microphones do not only capture mechanical noise, but also the electromagnetic interferences caused by the pulse width modulation that is used for the speed control of the motors. The motors are being used as variable pulse width oscillators that produce a more dynamic and complex sound spectrum than the oscillators normally used in analogue electronic music. Their frequencies are being controlled with a computer when shown as autonomous installation and manually with analogue control units in concerts. At the MEM festival in Bilbao, November 2014, the work was exhibited during three weeks. At the opening concert only the four bass amps were used for amplification. In January 2015 two concerts were given in Murcia and Madrid. Here the sounds were sent to a mixer from the line outputs of the amps and then distributed with a large sound system with more spatial and dynamic control: an intense and immersive experience lasting 30 minutes. In future performances the work may be expanded to 5 or 6 motors.

TRAILER

Mirlitones op de ICMC / Totally Huge New Music Festival, Perth, Australië, 2013

During 14-18 August, 2013 Mirlitones was shown as part of the ICMC 2013 and the Totally Huge New Music Festival at the Kidogo Art Institute, Fremantle, Australia. For the occasion we made a new computer program based on data taken from seven planets. The length of the pipes is related to the diameter of these planets and the elapse in time of the dynamics for each pipe is deduced from day and night cycles. Each pipe is treated differently  resulting in a slow, hypnotizing, ever changing sound mix. A new phase in the development of the work.

Another, practical novelty is that the pipes were bought in Australia while all other essential materials were brought in the plane as personal luggage. A formula that can be performed worldwide with little transport costs.

August 17 bass clarinet player Krista Martynes improvised together with the installation after a short introduction on the work by Peter Bosch.

Sound recordings: (play/pause at the left part of the bars)

The 1st track is a recording from the centre of the space when working as an autonomous installation, the 2nd is an excerpt of a recording made by Johannes S. Sistermanns of the live improvisation.

Wilberforces is a new work within our long series of vibratory projects. The title refers directly to a phenomenon from science, the Wilberforce Pendulum. This pendulum is nothing more than a hung metal spring with below it a central weight plus eccentric weights for calibration. The secret of the system lies in conceiving a calibration in such a way that the resonant frequencies of vertical movement and rotation of a spring are so near to each other that once set in motion its movement can change gradually from vertical motion into rotation and vice-versa without adding energy from an external source. It is an example of a coupled mechanical oscillator, often used as a demonstration in physics education.

In Wilberforces three long springs are used for generating video and audio data. The springs have a length of around six meters, a size normally not found in physics laboratories and resulting in spectacular large and slow movements. Each spring is hung from above and attached to a pneumatic actuator that sporadically adds energy to the system. Below one of the springs hangs a video camera and microphone, below the other two hang tiny loudspeakers. Signals from the moving camera, mike and speakers provide the basic material for the sound and images produced by the work, obviously influenced by everything occurring in and around the FACT Atrium. The irregular motion of the springs can be tracked and experienced through a real time projection of further processed sound and image within a purpose-built dark space at the rear of the building.

Mirlitones and Krachtgever at “Kunst Werkt”, Dordtyart, 2012

Mirlitones is gemaakt in opdracht van DordtYart, Dordrecht en maakte deel uit van de tentoonstelling “Kunst Werkt” april-september 2012 samen met de Krachtgever (1994-98). Zie www.dordtyart.nl

Mirlitones (2012)

Nits d´Aielo i Art, 2012, Último Esfuerzo Industrial I

Último Esfuerzo Industrial was premiered at the festival Nits d´Aielo i Art , Valencia, 14-03-2012. More info about the festival at

Último Esfuerzo Industrial (2012)

Our work Último Esfuerzo Rural (“Last Rural Effort”) was premiered in Valencia at the Ensems festival of contemporary music in May 2004. It is composed of two complementary installations. Together these produce a poetical ode dedicated to rural life and its people with an independent and creative state of mind that is disappearing in our globalised world. At the time we combined three periods in the project: The rural, industrial and computerized eras. Now, eight years later, it is about time to dedicate a work to the mechanical and analogue era, before nobody remembers how real things work and interact.

Último Esfuerzo Industrial-2012.mp3

Último Esfuerzo Industrial is a simple and effective work. It consists of three electric motors, three frequency controllers, three contact microphones and three bass guitar amps that amplify the signals captured by the mikes. The motor speeds may be controlled with a computer or manually with analogue control units.

Its sound is extremely dynamic with frequencies parting from humming basses and pleasant mids up to acrid trebles.
